Tradiția medicală la UBB își are originile în Universitas Claudiopolitana (Universitatea din Cluj), unde, în 1775/1776, au început activitățile medicale. Această tradiție a fost continuată în cadrul universității maghiare și apoi al celei românești din Cluj. În 1945, în cadrul noii „Universități cu limba de predare maghiară” din Cluj – care va deveni ulterior Universitatea Bolyai – a fost înființată o Facultate de Medicină, care însă a fost mutată ulterior la Târgu Mureș. În 1948, în contextul reformei comuniste a învățământului, componenta biomedicală a fost separată de Universitatea românească din Cluj, care, la acel moment, purta numele de Universitatea Victor Babeș.
Pentru a se ancora în prezent și viitor și pentru a-și recupera tradiția în domeniu - Universitatea Babeș-Bolyai (UBB) este succesoarea legală a Universității românești din Cluj și astfel a tradiției acesteia -, în anul 2020 UBB a creat Școala de Sănătate (School of Health), care a evoluat în 2022 în UBB School of Health – UBBMed. Facultatea de Științe Medicale și ale Sănătății s-a înființat prin Hotărârea de Guvern nr. 412/24.04.2025.
